Self-portrait
One of the first self-portraits I've done since 1992. Plenty of material to work with, all you need is a mirror. Whoa... I've aged since then! I like to keep the brushstrokes loose and not overwork things too much.
There is a popular saying among painters, especially those of us with little or no drafting skills, "If I wanted photorealism I'd use my camera." It's no accident that Impressionism and the retreat from strict representationalism began as photography advanced and became more accessible in the late 1800s.

I've done a series of these using lines or strokes to create form like they do in the old master's engravings. The figures seem to take on the form of a mummy, although not the original intention.
